The Root River Trail

Very Very Cool.

Cherity and I drove to Rushford, MN which is about 20 minutes from Winona. Upon arrival we unloaded the bikes, kids, picnic food, water, bikes, and bike trailers. The root river trail actually extends from Houston, MN and goes to Harmony, MN and Fountain, MN. It's about 60 miles of totally paved trail (asphalt).

Cherity and I chose to bike from Rushford to Whalen which was 27.4 round trip. The trail was absolutely beautiful. It meanders along the root river for much of the ride and is all rural and mostly wooded. The trail was superbly maintained. We saw bikers of all ages and it was fun to check out all the different bikes people were riding. We also came within 50-100 ft of some grazing deer and saw some vibrant colored birds... blue, orange, and yellow... birds I had never seen before. When we arrived in Whalen we stopped at a quaint little park and had our picnic. There was a nice little restaurant that is known for it's pie shop. We didn't stop there this time.

Cherity and I were really pleased with how the boys did. They didn't complain once about being in the trailers for that long. Owen counted all the small bridges we crossed and I think the park helped rejuvinate their spirits while in Whalen. Also amazing is that they didn't sleep at all during the near 3 hours of sitting in the trialers. We did stopped for Ice Cream in Peterson which was on the way. Next time I'll take pictures and post them. We can't wait to go again.

Awesome! What a neat experience that must have been. OF course, if I tried that I'd probably be wishing that the bike was motorized toward the end.
