So, I'm home alone again with no one to play with, but I have this new toy, the canoe. I strapped it to the car and brought it to McNally's landing and then participated in a questionnaire done by a kid working a summer job for the DNR to make me aware of Zebra Mussels and other such parasitic creatures. That was fine. He gave me a sticker and helped me get my canoe off the roof of my car. I like stickers : )

Great! I'm at Mcnally's. I've got my boat, my tackle box, my poles, some live bait and a nice evening. What I didn't think through was the extra thing I brought along... Molly. I don't know why it didn't occur to me. I just assumed. Molly's a lab. She'll love a canoe trip. Nope. She doesn't like getting in a canoe that floats in water. I picked her up and dropped her in and she jumped right back out with her tail between her legs. She didn't like the idea at all. I tried and tried and then gave up and put her in the car.

Back out on the canoe. Got my worm hooked and floating for one pole and I'm casting a top-water with the other pole... a nice silence.... then I hear it... a high pitched bark for attention. I ignore it. Then another serenade of barks. I continue to try to ignore it. The DNR guy moves his chair 50' further away from my car. Dang! Paddle back to shore and role the car windows up. It's like 65 degrees. She should be fine.

It turned out OK though. I got to hear some Owls or some sort of bird hooting back and forth as I canoed around fallen trees, down a narrow little backwater covered by a canopy of trees. (I even recorded some of the hooting on my camera) Not a bite was had but it was a peaceful evening despite the fact that I was doing more prep work than I was actually fishing or canoing. I need to take a whole day to do this sometime.

The silence of my mind can be a comforting place.... when it's silent.
